Patient Advocate

The Patient Advocate coordinates activities to ensure that Medicaid process eligibility for self-pay patients and other underinsured patients.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist patients and others to complete forms, applications, and other paperwork.
- Collect and review patient information to determine patient’s eligibility.
- Prepare documents, review for accuracy and completeness.
- Provide technical assistance on agency issues, services, and programs.
- Maintain and/or create files or record keeping systems. Sort, label files, and retrieve documents or other materials.
- Interact with patients at the site to provide real-time service support, address patient concerns.
- Develop and retain professional relationships with hospital staff.
- Handle caseload, retrieve, sustain, and communicate all designated reports.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to EMTALA and HIPAA guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications:
- 1+ year of work experience in health care, medical insurance, hospital, or clinic
- High School or GED required; associate degree or equivalent from 2-year college a plus.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced diverse environment
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills to interact with patients and hospital staff.
- Ability to travel locally to other work sites.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel pivot tables, Project, and PowerPoint)
- Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare processes.
Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $19.00 - $21.00 depending on the experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
