Software Development Lead

We are looking for a seasoned Software Development Lead with over 15+ years of experience to anchor our engineering organization. You will set architectural direction, drive engineering standards across teams, and serve as the primary technical voice for complex, distributed systems. This is a role for someone who thrives at the intersection of deep technical execution and cross-functional leadership.

What you will do

  • Lead design and delivery of scalable, cloud-native architectures
  • Champion AI-assisted development tooling across the engineering org
  • Define and enforce enterprise engineering standards and best practices
  • Architect microservices, event-driven systems, and distributed platforms
  • Mentor senior engineers and conduct architectural reviews
  • Collaborate with product and business stakeholders on technical strategy
  • Drive API design across REST and GraphQL contracts
  • Own system design for high-availability, high-throughput services

What we expect

· Minimum 15+ years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Deep expertise in Java 11+ and Spring Boot / Spring Cloud
  • Proven track record leading enterprise-scale architecture
  • Experience with AI/ML concepts and GenAI coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot)
  • Strong command of Angular for frontend systems
  • Hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Expert understanding of SQL and NoSQL data stores
  • Demonstrated ability to shape engineering culture and standards

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Experience building or integrating LLM-powered features into production systems
  • Familiarity with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd)
  • Background in Insurance domain is preferred

Salary and Other Compensation:

We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $106,200 – $168,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

Working arrangements

We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 3 days a week in a client office in Toronto, ON. Regardless of your working arrangement, we are here to support a healthy work-life balance though our various wellbeing programs.
