About the role
As a Senior Java Microservices Engineer, you will make an impact by designing, developing, and optimizing enterprise-scale payment applications that support high-volume, business-critical transaction processing. You will be a valued member of the engineering team and work collaboratively with architects, DevOps engineers, infrastructure teams, security teams, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performing solutions.

In this role, you will:
Design, develop, and support enterprise applications using Java 21, Spring Boot, Microservices, JMS, Kafka, and PCF.
Drive the end-to-end implementation of microservices architectures, defining service boundaries, integration patterns, and deployment strategies.
Deliver technical solutions for complex design challenges, troubleshoot production issues, and ensure application stability and resilience.
Optimize JVM-based applications and payment services to achieve low latency, high throughput, and reliable transaction processing.
Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to enhance CI/CD pipelines, improve observability, and streamline cloud deployments within PCF environments.
Participate actively in Agile Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
Perform unit testing, support deployments, remediate security vulnerabilities, and communicate project status to key stakeholders.
Promote engineering excellence through automation, reusable frameworks, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 3 days per week in a client or Cognizant office in Chicago, Illinois. What you need to have to be considered
10+ years of strong experience building enterprise applications using Java 21 and Spring Boot.
Hands-on experience designing and implementing Microservices-based architectures.
Experience with JMS, messaging frameworks, and asynchronous communication patterns.
Strong knowledge of Apache Kafka and event-driven application development.
Experience deploying and supporting applications on Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF).
Proven experience with application performance tuning, JVM optimization, and production support.
Strong understanding of secure coding practices, vulnerability remediation, and security scan compliance.
Experience supporting high-volume payment, transaction-processing, or messaging-based platforms.
These will help you stand out
Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment automation.
Knowledge of monitoring, logging, and observability tools.
Experience working within financial services, banking, or payments domains.
Familiarity with cloud-native application development and containerization technologies.
Strong stakeholder management, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $81,337 to $163,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
