Role: SQL Database Engineer
Location: Toronto , ON
Mandatory skills: SQL, Sybase
Role Description:
· Monitoring & health checks – Track server uptime, job failures, disk space, backup completion, replication/AG status, and respond to alerts from monitoring tools (e.g., SCOM, Nagios, SolarWinds).
· Incident/ticket handling – Own L1 tickets end-to-end (access requests, job failures, blocking sessions, connectivity issues) and escalate only the ones needing deep root-cause analysis to L2/L3.
· Backup & recovery operations – Verify backup jobs ran successfully, perform restores (point-in-time or full) when requested, and validate backup integrity on a schedule.
· Basic performance troubleshooting – Identify blocking/deadlocking sessions, long-running queries, and high CPU/IO consumers; kill or optimize as per runbook, escalating anything beyond scripted fixes.
· User & access management – Create/modify logins, roles, and permissions; handle password resets and access provisioning following change-control processes.
· Patch & maintenance support – Assist with applying patches, running index rebuilds/reorganizes, updating statistics, and executing other scheduled maintenance jobs.
· Documentation & runbook adherence – Maintain SOPs, update ticket notes, log root causes for recurring issues, and contribute to knowledge base articles.
· Change execution – Implement pre-approved schema changes, deployments, or configuration updates during change windows, with rollback plans ready.
· Monitoring & health checks – Monitor Sybase ASE server availability, engine/CPU utilization, device space, transaction log usage, and job schedules via sp_who, sp_helpdb, sp_spaceused, and monitoring tools (e.g., Sybase Central, MDA tables, Nagios/SCOM alerts).
· Incident/ticket handling – Own L1 tickets independently (login issues, connectivity failures, job failures, access requests) and escalate complex ASE performance or corruption issues to L2/L3.
· Backup & recovery operations – Execute and validate dump database / dump transaction jobs, perform load database / load transaction restores when required, and confirm backup server (Backup Server) job completion and integrity.
· Transaction log & space management – Monitor log segment growth, handle "log full" situations (dump tran with truncate_only when appropriate per policy), manage device space, and extend databases/devices as needed.
· Basic performance troubleshooting – Identify blocking locks and long-running processes using sp_lock, sp_who2, and MDA tables; kill blocking spids per runbook, and flag deeper query-plan/index issues to L2.
· User & access management – Create/modify logins and users (sp_addlogin, sp_adduser), manage roles and permissions (grant/revoke), and handle password resets following change-control procedures.
· Maintenance tasks – Run update statistics, dbcc checkdb/dbcc checktable integrity checks, reorg rebuilds, and review sp_configure settings; assist with ASE patching/EBF (Emergency Bug Fix) application.
· Documentation & change execution – Maintain SOPs and ticket logs, document recurring root causes, and implement pre-approved schema/config changes during change windows with rollback scripts ready.
Compensation: We are offering between $90,000 – $109,000. Applications will be accepted until Oct 9, 2026.Cognizant will only consider applicants for this position who are legally authorized to work in Canada without requiring employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
