Senior Java Developer

About the role

As a Senior Java Developer, you will make an impact by designing and developing scalable enterprise applications that support smart grid and utilities operations. You will work collaboratively with development, architecture, infrastructure, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and high-performing solutions using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kubernetes, and modern development practices.

In this role, you will:

• Design and develop scalable enterprise applications and microservices using Core Java, J2EE, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and REST web services.
• Provide hands-on technical guidance while contributing to coding, application design, testing, security, and development best practices.
• Build and support containerized applications using Kubernetes, focusing on scalability, availability, and consistent deployment across environments.
• Collaborate with utilities stakeholders, architecture, and infrastructure teams to translate smart grid operational requirements into reliable technical solutions and integrations.
• Drive application quality and performance through code reviews, automated testing, performance optimization, production troubleshooting, CI/CD practices, and effective use of Microsoft GitHub Copilot.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 2-3 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in Tucson, Arizona. What you need to have to be considered

• 7+ years of experience designing and developing enterprise applications using Core Java and J2EE.
• Strong hands-on experience with Spring Framework, Spring Boot, microservices, and REST web services.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, including containerized application deployment, scaling, and lifecycle management.
• Experience developing secure, scalable, and high-performing enterprise applications, including code reviews, testing, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
• Experience within the smart grid or utilities domain, with knowledge of areas such as grid monitoring, outage management, demand response, meter management, or utility operations.

These will help you stand out

• Experience using Microsoft GitHub Copilot or similar AI-assisted development tools to improve development productivity and code quality.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated quality checks, and modern source-control practices.
• Knowledge of utility integrations involving grid monitoring, billing, customer platforms, asset management, or regulatory reporting.
• Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer certification.
• Certified Kubernetes Administrator certification or an equivalent cloud-native credential.

Salary and Other Compensation

The annual salary for this position depends on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
