Behind the world’s largest generative AI hackathon

It began with a bold question from our CEO Ravi Kumar S: with 340,000+ associates, could Cognizant build the world’s largest vibe coding community?

Vibe coding isn't a typical hackathon. It’s a style of programming where you focus on creativity and problem solving while letting AI take care of the code. It’s fast and intuitive. And it empowers every associate—no matter where they are on their AI journey—to discover the exponential power of AI.

What followed was a record-breaking response, with associates around the world working as one and pushing the limits of their imagination and creativity. It was truly Cognizant’s DNA at work.

To build an event of such scale, we onboarded five leading vibe coding platforms: Lovable, Windsurf, Gemini Code Assist, GitHub Copilot and Cursor. These platforms allowed our associates to describe their intent in natural language and let the AI tools do the rest.

Security protocols were implemented to ensure safe participation. Learning guides and masterclasses also helped associates learn how to turn their visions into working software and prototypes.

The energy and shared rhythm of a global organization working together toward a common goal was contagious. And at the conclusion of Vibe Coding Week, the numbers spoke for themselves:

  • 30,601 working prototype projects built
  • 53,199 associates across 40 countries participated
  • A Guiness World Record for the most participants in an online generative AI hackathon

Beyond the numbers, what truly stood out was the creativity of our associates. An inspiring example comes from a team in Japan, who built a platform that’s making a real difference for people around the world. Let’s take a closer look at their innovation.

Project Team Safe: From typhoons to teamwork

In Japan, where earthquakes and typhoons are part of daily life, Yumin Zeng and colleagues Tekefumi, Sandeep and Keisuke saw Vibe Coding Week as a chance to build something that helps communities navigate these challenges. Together, they built Team Safe, a disaster detection and response tool designed to protect people and maintain business continuity.

During a disaster, Team Safe automatically detects each user’s location and matches it with real-time data received from the Japan Meteorological Agency. It then sends personalized notifications to users in affected areas, prompting them to confirm their safety, as well as an alert to the client with AI-powered guidance tailored to the specific disaster.

This information is then displayed on a shared dashboard, allowing teams to stay informed and coordinate effectively. Whether an earthquake or typhoon, users get actionable information to respond quickly and appropriately, even under pressure.

Lessons learned from vibe coding week

Vibe Coding Week gave our associates a glimpse into the future of work—where AI amplifies human creativity and transforms how we approach problems. It was about asking sharper questions, thinking with clarity and letting AI handle the heavy lifting so our teams could focus on what matters most: problem solving.

“I was amazed by how fast a system could be built with no code. I realized that AI isn’t just about posing the right questions, it’s about defining the problem and knowing how to evaluate the results.”

“AI in coding is like a smart assistant. It helps us skip the daunting part of writing long lines of code and debugging so we can focus on ideation and problem solving.”

From prototypes to possibilities: A blueprint for what’s next

Team Safe was just one of the 30,000+ impactful examples of what can be built with AI in a short span of time by unlocking the human imagination.

We’re now evaluating the prototypes shared by our associates. Some will be scaled and some will evolve, but all of them carry the same signature: bold ambition, shared purpose and the belief that innovation belongs to everyone.

The real story of Vibe Coding Week is not in the numbers or the record, but a change in mindset.
