Vandana’s 25-year journey from tech enthusiast to trusted advisor

Time has a strange sense of humor. It sneaks up on you when you’re busy chasing deadlines, then taps you on the shoulder and says, “congratulations on your 25th work anniversary!”

One day, I’m walking into an office in Chennai for my first project and the next thing you know, I’m leading CIO advisory conversations, discussing AI agents, data solutions, cloud enablement and other technologies that didn’t even exist in those days.

If I had to sum up my journey in one word, it would be exhilarating. Because every twist, every leap into the unknown has been worth it. Let me take you to where it all began.

The beginning: A young tech enthusiast

I joined Cognizant in May 2000 as a lateral hire with a passion for technology and solving real-world problems. Cognizant was young too. With 4,000+ associates, it was small enough for faces to feel familiar and big enough to feel like the future was ours to build.

“What struck me the most was the entrepreneurial culture. Colleagues and leaders alike were open to hearing new ideas, no matter how small. This culture exists to this day.”

The path to consulting: Reinventing along the way

If there’s one thing that technology teaches us, it’s that standing still isn’t an option.

Early in my career, I transitioned from system analysis to consulting. While system analysis had its own thrill, meeting with a client and listening to their challenges to provide innovative solutions was exciting. Every engagement allowed me to learn something new about technology and the people I worked with. It gave me the joy of knowing what we create could change how a business runs or how a patient gets better healthcare support.

Consulting: The thrill of staying ahead

In consulting, staying relevant and being caught up with the latest technologies is a necessity and I did not feel that as pressure, but rather as a world full of possibilities. When cloud technology emerged, I guided clients on cloud migration and transformation. When AI and automation were buzzwords, I began to explore how to simplify processes and bring in efficiency. Working in consulting taught me that the real joy is not in technology alone, but the impact it creates for our clients and the world

Reflections: Moments that defined my journey

25 years leave you with countless memories, but some of them stay etched forever. Ringing the Nasdaq bell was one of them, it was a moment that felt bigger than me, a symbol of how far we had come together. Winning the President’s Club award was another, not just for the recognition, but the experience that followed: a trip to the Bahamas with colleagues. Winning Consulting Magazine's Women in Tech Consulting for Innovation award was another great industry acknowledgement. And then there are the quieter moments when a client appreciates the difference we've made to them.

People and purpose: Things that truly matter

People and purpose are the two threads that have woven my journey through all these years. I’ve been fortunate to have some amazing mentors and sponsors who entrusted me with bigger canvases. I owe my success to them, to all our clients who saw us as partners and to the amazing teams that I worked with who always raised the bar.

Outside work, I enjoy swimming, Zumba, hiking on a quiet trail, traveling and spending time in nature. I’m also a trained Indian classical dancer and years of practice have taught me discipline, grace and the power of stillness; qualities that have made me a better person. My mother had a great influence on me. Her words echo inside me – be bold, make a name for yourself, but never stop listening. Her teachings have been my guiding compass.

What’s next: Leading with purpose

I feel really excited about the future. The journey ahead will be more focused around ownership of ideas and outcomes that’ll drive our company forward. Cognizant’s purpose has also never been clearer: to scale innovation, help our clients in a fast-changing world and of course, improve every day life.
