Job Summary:
We are seeking a Senior Apigee Developer to support the assessment, redesign, build, testing and controlled migration of enterprise APIs from the existing Apigee estate to a target API management platform. The role requires strong hands-on Apigee expertise, broad integration engineering capability, and the ability to translate Apigee-specific proxies, policies, security controls and operational configurations into functionally equivalent target-platform implementations.
The successful candidate will work with API architects, platform engineers, application teams, security, DevOps and operations stakeholders to deliver migration waves with minimal disruption to API consumers.
Key responsibilities:
- Assess the current Apigee estate, including API proxies, shared flows, flow hooks, API products, developer applications, KVMs, target servers, certificates, caches, portal dependencies and environment-specific configurations.
- Analyse existing proxy bundles and policies to identify reusable logic, unsupported features, custom JavaScript/Node.js components, security dependencies, performance constraints and migration complexity.
- Create source-to-target mapping for routing, transformations, mediation, traffic management, caching, logging, error handling, threat protection and API lifecycle controls.
- Refactor or rebuild API implementations on the target platform while preserving agreed functional behaviour, non-functional requirements and consumer contracts.
- Implement and validate authentication and authorisation patterns using OAuth 2.0, JWT, SAML, API keys, PingFederate integration, mTLS/TLS and enterprise identity controls.
- Develop and maintain REST and SOAP integrations using JSON, XML, JavaScript, Node.js and, where required, Spring Boot-based services or service callouts.
- Produce and maintain OpenAPI/Swagger definitions, API documentation, versioning standards and developer onboarding content; support portal or catalogue migration where applicable.
- Build automated migration utilities, scripts, templates and repeatable deployment packages to reduce manual conversion effort and improve consistency across API waves.
- Integrate API build, configuration and deployment activities with Git and CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and infrastructure-as-code practices such as Terraform.
- Create unit, functional, regression, negative, security and performance test assets using Postman and relevant API/service testing tools; compare source and target behaviour and document variances.
- Support environment configuration across cloud, container and hybrid landscapes, including GCP, GKE, Kubernetes, Docker, Anthos, Istio/Anthos Service Mesh, load balancers, firewalls, Cloud Armor and IAM.
- Troubleshoot migration defects using gateway trace, logs, analytics and platform monitoring; resolve policy, networking, certificate, DNS, firewall, routing and backend connectivity issues.
- Plan and execute migration rehearsals, cutover activities, rollback arrangements, production validation and early-life support for each migration wave.
- Maintain migration inventories, technical design records, dependency logs, risk and issue inputs, test evidence, deployment guides, operational runbooks and knowledge-transfer materials.
- Participate in client interviews, technical workshops, design reviews and status discussions; communicate risks, trade-offs and implementation recommendations clearly.
- Provide technical leadership to developers, conduct code and configuration reviews, promote reusable patterns, and ensure adherence to API governance and security standards.
Required experience and capabilities:
- 6-10 years of overall integration/API engineering experience, with substantial recent hands-on delivery on Apigee.
- Hands-on experience with one or more of Apigee Edge, Apigee X, Apigee Hybrid or Apigee OPDK, including API proxies, policies, shared flows, products, apps, KVMs and target servers.
- Practical experience in API gateway migration, platform modernisation, large-scale API onboarding, or conversion of gateway-specific policies to another API management product.
- Strong REST API design and implementation skills, plus working knowledge of SOAP/XML integration and mediation patterns.
- Strong understanding of API security, authentication and authorisation, OAuth 2.0, JWT, SAML, TLS/mTLS, certificates, secrets and enterprise identity integration.
- Experience with OpenAPI/Swagger, SwaggerHub or Stoplight, API documentation and lifecycle governance.
- Experience with JavaScript and shell scripting; working knowledge of Node.js and/or Spring Boot for custom extensions and supporting services.
- Experience with Git, Jenkins, CI/CD, automated testing, Postman and deployment promotion across multiple environments.
- Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, GKE, Anthos, Istio/service mesh, cloud networking, load balancers, firewalls and IAM.
- Ability to investigate complex integration issues independently and communicate effectively with client architects, security teams, infrastructure teams and application owners.
