We are looking for a compassionate, detail-oriented, bilingual Spanish professional who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. As a Patient Advocate, you will support uninsured patients by connecting them with government or community programs that can help cover their medical expenses. It is equal parts customer-facing, administrative, and process-driven, requiring effective communication and collaboration with hospitals and government agencies. The ideal candidate needs to be comfortable working onsite in a hospital and handling sensitive documentation.
In this role, you will:
•Accurately document and maintain all patient information in required systems.
•Complete, submit, and track applications through final approval.
•Deliver exceptional customer service to patients, families, and hospital partners.
•Build strong working relationships with hospital staff and external stakeholders.
•Manage inbound and outbound calls and manage enrollment-related paperwork.
•Organize and maintain patient account work queues.
•Assist patients in gathering and submitting required documents.
•Review patient data for accuracy and eligibility requirements.
•Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA, EMTALA, and confidentiality standards.
•Work effectively with diverse populations while demonstrating effective communication, organization, and time management skills.
•Travel locally between hospital locations as needed.
•Perform other related duties as assigned.
Location: Chicago, IL - working onsite; shift hours Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm with occasional weekend coverage.
What you must have to be considered:
•1+ year of work experience in healthcare, medical insurance, hospital, or clinic.
•High School or GED required.
•Bilingual Spanish
•Ability to adapt to new tools, workflows, and updates to government programs.
•Strong administrative and customer service background.
•Demonstrates strong self-motivation and the ability to independently with minimum supervision.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Comfortable navigating hospital environments and patient rooms.
•Strong multitasking and time management abilities.
•Experience working with state and federal government programs.
•Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel pivot tables, Project, and Power).
This will help you stand out:
•Associates degree or equivalent from a two-year college.
•Prior experience in a hospital or healthcare setting.
•Familiarity with medical terminology and healthcare processes.
•Comfortable working in a fast-paced, diverse environment.

Salary and Other Compensation
The hourly rate for this position is between $20.00 - $22.00 per hour, depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
The position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant's applicable plans.
