About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Engineer (COBOL, DB2, CICS) to support, enhance, and maintain critical enterprise applications within a complex Mainframe environment. In this role, you will leverage your expertise across core z/OS technologies to deliver reliable, secure, and high-performing solutions. You will collaborate with business and technical teams to resolve production issues, implement enhancements, and drive continuous improvement across key applications

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, maintain, and support Mainframe applications using COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, CICS, SAS, Easytrieve, and z/OS Connect.
  • Investigate production incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions to complex application issues.
  • Partner with business analysts, application teams, and infrastructure teams to deliver enhancements, technical solutions, and production support.
  • Participate in technical design, code reviews, testing, implementation, deployment, and ongoing application maintenance activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve application performance, automation, reliability, and operational stability while ensuring compliance with enterprise standards.

What you need to have to be considered:

  • Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS in enterprise Mainframe environments.
  • Working knowledge of SAS, Easytrieve, z/OS Connect, and related z/OS technologies.
  • Experience supporting production applications, including incident management, troubleshooting, problem resolution, and application support.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand and support complex legacy systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.

These will help you stand out:

  • Experience supporting insurance, financial services, or other high-volume transaction processing environments.
  • Knowledge of CAPSIL and/or Ingenium platforms.
  • Experience driving application modernization, process automation, or performance improvement initiatives.
  • Experience participating in on-call support for business-critical applications.
  • Experience collaborating with distributed onshore and offshore teams in a hybrid work environment.

Salary and compensation:

The annual salary for this position will be between $80,000 to 91,000 per year depending on the experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
