About the role
As a Java Backend Developer, you will make an impact by designing, developing, and optimizing scalable backend applications that support critical retail and warehouse management operations. You will be a valued member of the engineering team and work collaboratively with architects, developers, QA engineers, product owners, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, high-performing solutions that align with enterprise standards.
In this role, you will:
- Design and develop scalable backend services and microservices using Java and Spring Boot to support business-critical retail and warehouse management platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions that deliver reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- Build and enhance APIs, integrations, and data services that support inventory, fulfillment, and order management processes.
- Drive application modernization initiatives, improve system performance, and reduce technical debt through best practices and architectural improvements.
- Partner with quality engineering and operations teams to ensure observability, monitoring, security, and production readiness across all solutions.

Based on this role's business requirements, this is an onsite position requiring 5 days per week in a client or Cognizant office in Sunnyvale, California.
What you need to have to be considered
- Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot, including the design and development of enterprise-scale backend applications and microservices.
- Experience building and supporting RESTful APIs, service integrations, and distributed systems in complex application environments.
- Solid understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases, including data modeling, query optimization, and high-volume transaction processing.
- Knowledge of software design principles, object-oriented programming, and architectural patterns that support scalable and maintainable solutions.
- Experience working within Agile teams and collaborating effectively with business and technical stakeholders.
- Understanding of secure coding practices, application security, authentication, authorization, and data protection principles.
- Exposure to retail, supply chain, warehouse management, inventory management, order processing, or fulfillment systems.

Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $65,000 - $80,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
