About the role
As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, IaC & DevOps, you will make an impact by owning the end-to-end provisioning architecture across GitHub Actions, Terraform, and MongoDB Atlas for a high-visibility POC. You will drive the full automation stack including module design, pipeline topology, state management, and internal portal integration, while serving as the primary technical interface for the client. You will be a valued member of the Cognizant Cloud Infrastructure and Security team, working collaboratively with IaC engineers, the internal portal platform team, and key client stakeholders.
In this role, you will
• Own the end-to-end provisioning architecture spanning GitHub Actions → Terraform → MongoDB Atlas, and produce the design artifacts (architecture diagrams, sequence flows, module contracts)
• Design and develop the Terraform module structure (project, cluster, network access, database user, API key, role binding) with environment-specific tfvars conventions and CODEOWNERS-based change governance
• Architect the GitHub Actions pipeline — repository dispatch from the internal self-service portal, branch protection, plan/apply jobs, environment gates, and status callbacks
• Define Terraform state management strategy (Terraform Cloud workspaces vs S3 + DynamoDB) and implement the chosen backend
• Lead the portal integration workstream: define the webhook/API contract, design input validation, and coordinate with the internal platform team on intake form schema and downstream hand-off touchpoints
• Pair with the Database Engineer on cluster configuration standards and code-review Atlas-related Terraform changes
• Run weekly status reviews with stakeholders, present design decisions, manage scope, and surface risks early
• Mentor the offshore IaC engineer on Terraform module design, testing patterns, and code-review standards
• Drive end-to-end testing, defect triage, and the final POC demo for the Innovation Governance team

We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 3 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in Hartford, CT. What you need to have to be considered
• 7+ years in infrastructure / DevOps / platform engineering, with at least 4 years writing production Terraform
• Deep Terraform expertise: module composition, state design, workspace strategy, provider versioning, drift detection, and policy-as-code (Sentinel or OPA)
• Hands-on with the MongoDB Atlas Terraform provider (or equivalent depth on AWS/Azure providers with willingness to come up the Atlas curve in week 1)
• Strong GitHub Actions experience: composite actions, reusable workflows, OIDC-based cloud auth, branch protection, environments, and approval gates
• Experience integrating CI/CD pipelines with upstream self-service portals via webhook / repository_dispatch / workflow_dispatch patterns
• Comfortable in HashiCorp Vault or equivalent secrets manager for API key handling and Atlas programmatic key storage
• Solid Bash / Python / TypeScript for glue code, validation, and pipeline tooling
These will help you stand out
• Familiarity with MongoDB Atlas operational features beyond IaC (monitoring, alerting, global clusters)
• Experience with Terraform Cloud or Atlantis for collaborative plan/apply workflows
• Experience with policy-as-code tooling such as Open Policy Agent (OPA) or HashiCorp Sentinel
• Prior experience leading offshore/onshore hybrid engineering teams
• Background in client-facing roles or managed services environments with stakeholder presentation experience
