About the role
As an Engineering Manager (Java / Microservices), you will make an impact by leading the delivery of scalable, resilient microservices and driving innovation through AI-enabled engineering practices. You will be a valued member of the engineering team and work collaboratively with product owners, architects, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions aligned with business goals.

In this role, you will:
- Lead and mentor a high-performing engineering team to design, build, and deploy scalable microservices using Core Java and Spring Boot
- Drive adoption of modern development workflows, including AI-powered tools, to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery speed
- Own end-to-end microservices architecture, including API design, data models, performance, and resilience
- Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions and prioritized backlogs
- Establish best practices across CI/CD, testing, observability, and secure coding to ensure reliable and scalable production systems

What you need to have to be considered:
- Strong hands-on experience with Core Java and a proven track record building enterprise-grade backend systems
- Deep expertise in Spring Boot for developing modular, scalable microservices
- Proven experience designing and delivering microservices architectures, including API design and service communication patterns
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers and guiding technical solutions in complex environments
- Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and code quality practices
- Familiarity with cloud-native environments, containerization, and observability tools
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and operations teams
These will help you stand out:
- Experience leveraging AI/automation tools or agents to enhance software development workflows
- Exposure to modern developer tooling for code navigation, debugging, and collaboration (e.g., Windsurf or similar platforms)
- Knowledge of advanced Java performance optimization, concurrency, and memory management
- Experience working in hybrid or distributed team environments
- Relevant certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional (Java) or Spring-related certifications

The annual salary for this position is between $65,000 - $113,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
