About the role
This position involves the creation and maintenance of systems and processes aimed at ensuring data excellence and supporting the operations of flagship Geo offerings, with a focus on the main mapping product. Serving as a technical consultant, the Senior GIS Tools Specialist helps with the transition of tools to production while shaping the development roadmap for operational workflows.
Responsibilities:
- Analysis and troubleshooting of software and tool issues: Lead the identification and resolution of intricate, cross-functional issues found within products or tools,
- Be the technical expert: Advise Geo teams and managers, removing technical hurdles and solving major user problems,
- Work with engineering teams: Help define how to report and track bugs, ensuring critical issues are fixed quickly and communicated clearly to leadership,
- Manage tool updates: Plan and coordinate when new tools and updates are released, while checking for potential risks,
- Lead testing: Create testing plans for new features and fixes to make sure they are ready for global use,
- Write code: Regularly write high-quality code for tools and set standards for how others should code,
- Build new tools and integrations: Design and launch new tools and dashboards that help teams work more efficiently, integrating RESTful endpoints, APIs, and protocols (e.g., MCP) to interface with backend services,
- Implement AI solutions: Strategically deploy and integrate AI-based solutions to enhance existing tools and drive new operational efficiencies,
- Solve global tech issues: Provide technical solutions for complex software problems on Linux,
- Manage advanced support: Create and run the process for handling technical bugs and performance issues, making sure to find and fix the root causes,
- Spatial ETL Automation: Design and maintain automated spatial data translation workflows using FME,
- Geospatial Platform Administration: Administer enterprise GIS services, spatial databases, and feature layers across the ArcGIS Enterprise environment to support operational tools,
- Own end-to-end tool lifecycle & delivery: Lead requirements gathering, technical architecture, milestone delivery, and user adoption across operations and engineering teams,
- Architect advanced AI solutions for data operations: Design and deploy multi-agent workflows, RAG systems, and autonomous reconciliation pipelines to automate data ingestion, policy validation, and cross-source anomaly detection,
Drive observability & Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Lead post-mortems and preventative engineering for critical tool outages, data ingestion failures, and operational SLA/SLO breaches.
Requirements:
- 5-6 years' experience in a similar domain, specifically working with large-scale geographic data products,
- Advanced GIS experience, including spatial analysis and data pipeline integration (ArcGIS Desktop/Server preferred),
- Advanced GIS experience with ESRI Enterprise, ArcGIS Desktop/Server, spatial data pipelines, and FME-based solutions,
- Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in Python,
- Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in SQL,
- JavaScript and/or other relevant front-end/tooling languages is required,
- AI Familiarity (intermediate), understanding prompt engineering, Cloud/CLI, proven record of implementing AI solutions. Senior roles require AI, Cloud,
- Working knowledge of modern AI capabilities (e.g., LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, and orchestration frameworks) to identify automation opportunities and evaluate product feature feasibility,
- At least a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience,
- Exceptional technological savviness and a proven ability to master and integrate new complex technologies rapidly,
- Superior interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders up to the executive level,
- Proven ability to thrive in a rapidly-changing, ambiguous, and high-pressure environment, providing expert guidance and technical leadership to peers during production challenges, transitions, and tool deployments,
- Expert-level, structured problem-solving skills, capable of tackling ill-defined technical challenges, paired with meticulous attention to detail in technical design and execution,
- Demonstrated ability to drive initiatives independently (self-starter), serving as a proactive technical leader who mentors others and champions a culture of continuous learning and creative, scalable problem solving,
- Experience with technical platforms such as GitHub and machine learning platforms like Vertex AI,
- ETL & Data Engineering: Hands-on experience building automated spatial pipelines, data validation checks, and handling spatial vector formats (GeoJSON, Shapefiles) is an asset,
- Web Scraping & Data Extraction: Experience with scraping frameworks (e.g., Playwright) to extract, parse, and reconcile external web data is an asset,
- Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and deploying services on cloud infrastructure is an asset.
