Database Platform Engineer – MSSQL

The engagement aims to reshape the database offering for the entire group by introducing a 'Database as a Service' model and expanding the current team with additional capabilities. It involves managing day-to-day database operations, including vulnerability management, service level management, routine backups, and system monitoring. Cognizant will provide engineering resources as needed, design and develop an automated database provisioning platform, and ensure 24/7 support for database operations.
The engagement will operate under a blended team model, combining DevOps engineers and Database Platform Engineers. The team will adopt the current agile Scrum framework, with responsibilities for both development and operational support. The team will work in sync with existing infrastructure and teams, ensuring smooth integration and knowledge sharing.
About the role
We are seeking a skilled Database Platform Engineer to join our team.
As a Database Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for implementing, building and managing MSSQL database platforms in a hybrid setup (Azure and on-prem data centers) ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of database services.
The Database Platform Engineer will be involved in all aspects of building new solutions, including requirement gathering, design, development, testing, and deployment as well as daily management of environments.
They will also be able to collaborate with other team members, including other engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions on time.
In this role, you will:
· Set up, operate, and administer Microsoft SQL Server databases (installation, configuration, patching/upgrades, and instance management 2019 up to 2025).
· Design, implement, and support high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) for SQL Server on Azure (IaaS / non-managed) and on-prem (e.g., Always On Availability Groups, clustering, log shipping as applicable).
· Own backup (Rubrik), restore, and recovery processes; regularly test restores and contribute to disaster recovery readiness.
· Monitor and troubleshoot availability and performance (alerts, blocking/deadlocks, capacity, storage/IO); perform performance tuning (indexes, statistics, query guidance).
· Create and maintain CI/CD (Azure DevOps, Github Actions) pipelines to automate DBA and platform tasks (build/deploy, configuration, patching workflows, scheduled jobs, reporting).
Work model
The role is primarily office-based (five days), but partial work-from-home is possible (two to three days in office, rest remote)
Shift Coverage: The candidate must be flexible for 24x7 coverage, joining an existing team to ensure round-the-clock support.
What you need to have to be considered
· Strong background in SQL Server administration (version from 2019 to 2025): installation, configuration, monitoring, upgrades/patching, performance tuning, security, backup/restore, and HA/DR.
· Experience with hybrid environments (Azure and on-prem), including Azure IaaS/VMs.
· Strong automation mindset (scripting and repeatable deployments/operations, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).
· Working understanding of networking and storage concepts (latency, throughput, IOPS) and their impact on SQL Server.
