Job Description: PostgreSQL Database Administrator
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator to support and maintain enterprise AWS database infrastructure. This role is primarily support and advisory in nature — working closely with application teams to troubleshoot issues, implementing changes, guide migrations, and ensure database stability. The ideal candidate brings deep PostgreSQL architecture knowledge, hands-on AWS experience, and strong operational discipline.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain PostgreSQL and RDS PostgreSQL instances across dev, test, QA, and production environments
- Support application teams in troubleshooting database issues, replication failures, connectivity problems, and performance degradation
- Assist app teams in resolving AWS DMS issues including task failures, CDC lag, table errors, and cutover coordination
- Deploy and manage database infrastructure using AWS CloudFormation templates
- Monitor database health, set up alarms, and analyze logs using Amazon CloudWatch and CloudWatch Log Insights
- Audit database activity and support compliance reviews using AWS CloudTrail
- Troubleshoot and resolve logical replication issues including lag, slot bloat, and subscription failures
- Manage roles, users, schemas, and privileges across multiple databases and environments
- Tune query performance using execution plans, auto_explain, parameter group optimization, and session management
- Raise, track, and resolve incidents and change requests through ServiceNow (ITSM)
- Perform DBA operations on Linux environments including log analysis, file management, and Shell/Python based automation
- Support SDE/ArcGIS geodatabase environments hosted on Aurora PostgreSQL
- Maintain documentation and runbooks for database operations and incident resolution
- Perform minor and major Aurora PostgreSQL version upgrades including pre-upgrade assessments, snapshot backups, parameter group validation, extension compatibility checks, and post-upgrade monitoring
- Coordinate and document all upgrade activities through ServiceNow change requests with rollback plans and CAB approval
Required Skills
- Strong understanding of PostgreSQL architecture — WAL, MVCC, autovacuum, connection pooling, replication slots and partitioning
- Hands-on experience with AWS DMS — troubleshooting task failures, CDC replication issues, and supporting app teams through migration challenges
- Proficiency with AWS CloudFormation for infrastructure-as-code
- Experience with Amazon CloudWatch — dashboards, metrics, log insights, and alarm configuration
- Familiarity with AWS CloudTrail for auditing API activity and compliance
- Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL security — roles, schemas, privileges, and access control
- Experience with ServiceNow for incident management, change requests, and ITSM workflows
- Comfortable working in Linux environments — log parsing, shell scripting, file operations, and CLI-based database administration
- Ability to write PL/pgSQL, dynamic SQL, and maintenance automation scripts
Good to Have
- Familiarity with SDE/ArcGIS geodatabases on PostgreSQL
- Knowledge of logical replication setup (publications, subscriptions)
- Experience working with CyberArk Vault
Soft Skills
- Strong communicator — able to guide and advise application teams clearly during incidents
- Comfortable working within formal change advisory (CAB) processes
- Self-driven and capable of managing multiple concurrent support requests independently
