We are seeking a highly skilled NonStop COBOL Software Engineer to design, develop, maintain, and support mission-critical applications running on the HPE NonStop (L-Series) platform. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with NonStop COBOL, SCOBOL, DDL, Agile methodologies, and production support within high-availability environments. This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver enhancements, resolve production issues, and contribute to modernization and DevOps initiatives.
What you will do
· Design, develop, test, and maintain mission-critical applications on the HPE NonStop (L-Series) platform using NonStop COBOL and SCOBOL.
· Develop and support screen-based transaction processing applications for highly available and fault-tolerant systems.
· Define, modify, and maintain database schemas and structures using DDL for NonStop SQL/Enscribe databases.
· Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and backlog grooming.
· Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues while ensuring minimal disruption to critical business operations.
· Collaborate with QA, DevOps, Business Analysts, and other stakeholders to gather requirements, estimate effort, and deliver application enhancements.
· Manage user stories, tasks, defects, and project documentation using JIRA and Confluence.
What we expect
· Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience developing and supporting applications using NonStop COBOL.
· Minimum 3 years of experience with SCOBOL for screen-based application development on NonStop platforms.
· Minimum 3 years of experience using DDL for database schema design, development, and maintenance.
· Minimum 5 years of experience working with HPE NonStop (L-Series) systems in development and/or production support environments.
· Minimum 3 years of experience working in Agile development environments (Scrum/Kanban).
· Minimum 3 years of experience utilizing JIRA and Confluence for sprint management, task tracking, and documentation.
· Minimum 1 year of experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, build automation, and release management.

Salary and Other Compensation:
We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $ 61,650– $ 91,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.
Working arrangements
We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 4 days a week in a client office in Toronto, ON.
