Senior Java Developer (J2EE/ SOAP/Struts/WebSphere), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

About the role

As a Senior Java Developer (J2EE/ SOAP/Struts/WebSphere), you will make an impact by designing and developing scalable backend services that power high-performance, customer-facing banking applications. You will be a valued member of an Agile engineering team and collaborate closely with product owners, architects, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver secure, reliable, and cloud-native solutions.

In this role, you will:

Design and develop robust microservices-based solutions using J2EE, SOAP, Struts, and WebSphere, ensuring scalability, performance, and maintainability.
Write clean, efficient, and testable Java code (Java 8, 11, and 17) to implement business logic that is easy to understand, extend, and troubleshoot.
Develop and optimize Spring Boot applications, including configuration management, data access layers, and security implementations.
Build and maintain Kafka-based messaging integrations to support reliable, event-driven communication with proper message ordering, durability, and error handling.
Create and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, and database interactions to support transactional workloads while ensuring data integrity and performance.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (QA, DevOps, Product) to deliver high-quality software solutions aligned with business requirements.
Perform code reviews, debugging, and performance tuning to ensure application stability and efficiency.
Ensure adherence to best practices in software development, including CI/CD, version control, and documentation standard

What you need to have to be considered

· 7+ years of experience.

Strong experience in J2EE, SOAP, Struts, and WebSphere.
Hands-on experience with Java (versions 8, 11, and 17) and solid understanding of object-oriented programming concepts.
Proven experience in developing microservices using Spring Boot.
Experience with Apache Kafka or similar messaging frameworks for event-driven architectures.
Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases (e.g., Oracle, DB2, MySQL).
Experience with RESTful APIs and web services development.
Familiarity with build tools (Maven/Gradle) and version control systems (Git).
Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, application deployment, and DevOps practices is a plus.

Canadian Pay Transparency Statement

We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $ 61,650 – $95,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.
