About the role

As an AI & Modern Engineering Architect, you will make an impact by shaping target-state architecture and translating complex legacy application findings into practical, delivery-ready modernisation solutions. You will be a valued member of the Solution and Domain Architecture team, working collaboratively with client stakeholders, programme governance, cloud, engineering, data, integration, testing and operations teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop solution architecture inputs and target designs for complex telecommunications applications, translating business capabilities, rules, interfaces, data, batch behaviour and non-functional requirements into clear modernisation decisions.
  • Guide legacy modernisation treatment planning across refactor, migration and decommissioning pathways, while protecting functional parity, operational continuity and critical downstream dependencies.
  • Align architecture decisions with enterprise reference architecture and AWS-aligned cloud direction, applying open standards, API-first principles and decoupled functional boundaries where appropriate.
  • Incorporate AI-assisted engineering practices into solution design, including code modernisation, automated testing, documentation generation, application analysis and platform observability, while ensuring governance, security and business value outcomes.
  • Define future-state architectures that leverage cloud-native, data-driven and AI-enabled capabilities to help clients modernise legacy platforms and establish scalable digital foundations.
  • Define and review data, integration, migration and cutover architecture, including dependency mapping, reconciliation, parallel-run, rollback and stabilisation considerations.
  • Present evidence-based recommendations, risks and trade-offs through architecture governance forums, supporting design approvals, readiness reviews, transition, cutover and handover.

Work model

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 4 days a week in a client or Cognizant office in Sydney or Melbourne. What you must have to be considered

  • Experience in solution or domain architecture within complex enterprise transformation, ideally in telecommunications or another regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated experience applying AI-led software engineering approaches to legacy modernization initiatives, including automated code analysis, reverse engineering, documentation generation, code transformation, testing acceleration and cloud migration planning using tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Devin, Codex, GitHub Copilot and Amazon Q Developer.
  • Experience shaping mainframe-to-cloud or application modernisation solutions, with knowledge of Java/Spring and AWS-aligned architecture patterns.
  • Ability to produce solution blueprints, architecture decisions, dependency maps, migration designs, and risk and assumption records from incomplete or ambiguous information.
  • Strong client-facing communication and facilitation skills, with experience influencing architecture, engineering, programme and governance stakeholders in multi-vendor environments.

These will help you succeed

  • Telecommunications architecture experience across order, service, billing, assurance, customer or fixed-line capabilities.
  • Experience with data migration, integration architecture, application decomposition, cutover or legacy decommissioning.
  • Knowledge of IMS, VSAM, NATURAL, SAS and complex mainframe interface landscapes.
  • Enterprise, solution architecture or cloud certification.
  • A pragmatic, evidence-led approach that clearly distinguishes confirmed facts, assumptions, dependencies and open decisions.
