Blending our deep industry and technology advisory capability, we create innovative business solutions for Fortune 500 clients. And now, we’re looking for our next colleague who’ll join us in shaping the future of business. Could it be you?
About the role
As a Consulting Principal – Energy Trading Optimisation, you will make an impact by leading advisory and transformation engagements across energy asset optimisation, energy trading, ETRM, CTRM, and power and gas markets. You will help clients optimise physical and financial assets, improve trading performance, modernise operating models, and implement data-led, technology-enabled capabilities across European energy markets. This role may be hired at Senior Manager Consulting or Consulting Principal level, based on experience.
In this role, you will:
· Lead consulting engagements focused on energy asset optimisation, trading strategy, portfolio optimisation, scheduling, dispatch, risk management, and commercial performance improvement.
· Advise clients on European power, gas, LNG, renewables, storage, flexibility, ancillary services, and cross-border trading market dynamics.
· Translate business strategy into operating model, process, data, and technology requirements across front, middle, and back-office trading functions.
· Identify optimisation opportunities across generation assets, storage, demand response, gas assets, LNG portfolios, power purchase agreements, hedging structures, and renewable energy portfolios.
· Lead process assessments, requirements definition, solution design, and implementation support for ETRM, CTRM, asset optimisation, forecasting, and analytics platforms.
· Partner with trading, origination, risk, operations, finance, regulatory, and technology stakeholders to shape practical and scalable transformation roadmaps.
· Define data and analytics use cases for forecasting, pricing, scenario modelling, exposure management, profit and loss analytics, and automated optimisation.
· Provide senior client leadership with decision-ready insights, commercial options, risks, dependencies, and implementation recommendations.
· Contribute to business development by shaping proposals, solution offerings, thought leadership, and client presentations for energy trading and optimisation opportunities.
· Coach and guide consulting teams to ensure high-quality delivery, strong domain depth, stakeholder confidence, and measurable client outcomes.
Work model
We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position with an expected presence at the client office in London two days per week. The role also requires frequent travel across Europe to support client workshops, discovery sessions, solution design, steering committees, and delivery governance. Travel may be more frequent for new projects and may reduce to approximately twice a month depending on engagement needs. Regardless of your working arrangement, we are here to support a healthy work-life balance though our various wellbeing programs.
What you must have to be considered
· 12+ years of experience in energy, utilities, commodities trading, energy consulting, or trading technology transformation, with significant exposure to European energy markets.
· Strong domain understanding of asset-backed trading, portfolio optimisation, power and gas trading, market operations, dispatch, nominations, balancing, and settlement processes.
· Experience working with energy trading organisations, utilities, generators, suppliers, aggregators, or integrated energy companies.
· Proven consulting delivery experience, including stakeholder management, business analysis, operating model design, transformation planning, and programme leadership.
· Hands-on understanding of ETRM and CTRM platforms, trading workflows, position management, exposure reporting, trade lifecycle, valuation, profit and loss, and risk processes.
· Experience supporting digital transformation, data analytics, automation, AI-enabled decision support, or optimisation tooling within an energy trading environment.
· Ability to engage confidently with C-suite leaders, trading leadership, commercial teams, risk heads, technology leaders, and operational stakeholders.
· Ability to travel across the UK and Europe, including Belgium, Denmark, and the UK, as required by client engagements.
These will help you succeed
· Experience with Endur or other energy trading and risk management platforms.
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Energy, Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
· Professional experience or certifications in energy markets, trading, risk management, project delivery, business analysis, or ETRM platforms.
· Experience with European market structures, including power, gas, LNG, renewables, balancing markets, ancillary services, and cross-border trading.
· Strong commercial judgment, including understanding of deal economics, asset optionality, commodity price exposure, risk-adjusted returns, and value creation levers.
· Familiarity with optimisation engines, forecasting tools, analytics platforms, cloud data platforms, and integration patterns.
· Strong executive communication, facilitation, presentation, proposal writing, and client advisory skills.
· Ability to mentor teams, build capability, manage ambiguity, and work effectively across multi-country delivery environments.
The ideal candidate is a senior consulting leader with deep energy trading and asset optimisation experience, strong commercial judgement, and the ability to bridge business, technology, data, and operations. They should be equally comfortable advising trading leadership on value creation opportunities, working with delivery teams on implementation detail, and representing Cognizant in senior client conversations across Europe.
We're excited to meet people who share our mission and can make an impact in a variety of ways. Don't hesitate to apply, even if you only meet the minimum requirements listed. Think about your transferable experiences and unique skills that make you stand out as someone who can bring new and exciting things to this role.
