This hybrid role for a Junior Software Engineer involves designing, developing, and maintaining IBM Mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and core utilities. The role supports a global organization, focusing on stable delivery of change requests, resolution of production incidents, and continuous improvement of code quality. Exposure to Cards & Payments domain processes is an added advantage.
In this role, you will:
Collaborate with senior engineers to analyze business requirements and translate them into efficient IBM Mainframe solutions.
Develop, modify, and unit test COBOL programs and JCL jobs for batch and online processes, ensuring reliability and maintainability.
Configure and execute IBM Mainframe utilities for file handling, dataset management, and performance tuning.
Create, update, and optimize JCL scripts to manage batch processes, ensuring proper job scheduling, dependencies, and restart mechanisms.
Design and maintain VSAM datasets, ensuring data integrity and efficient access for high-volume transactional workloads.
Write and optimize DB2 queries and embedded SQL within COBOL programs for data processing needs.
Participate in code reviews and walkthroughs to ensure adherence to coding standards, quality, and security practices.
Investigate and resolve production incidents through root cause analysis and implement sustainable fixes.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 3 - 4 days a week in a client office in Orlando, FL or New York, NY or Dallas, TX. What you need to have to be considered
1–4 years of hands-on experience with IBM Mainframe technologies including COBOL, JCL, DB2, VSAM, and utilities.
Strong understanding of relational databases and DB2 concepts such as indexing and query optimization.
Familiarity with Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including development, testing, and deployment processes.
Exposure to or willingness to learn Cards & Payments domain concepts.
Experience with version control systems, ticketing tools, and mainframe job scheduling systems is preferred.
Ability to follow organizational standards, compliance requirements, and quality processes.
Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $40,170 to $ 60,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
