Senior Software Engineer-Distributed Systems & Microservices
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and evolve a modern, event-driven microservices platform supporting North Carolina's toll and vehicle registration systems. In this role, you will work on distributed systems that manage account management, payment processing, and vehicle transactions at scale.
Technology Stack
- Backend: Java 21, Spring Boot 3.5.9, Spring Cloud, Spring Kafka
- Databases: PostgreSQL, Redis (Lettuce), Flyway migrations
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Cloud Azure
- Messaging: Apache Kafka, event choreography patterns
- Tools & Quality: Maven, MapStruct, Lombok, JUnit 5, Mockito, TestContainers, JaCoCo, OpenAPI/SpringDoc, GitHub
- Authentication: OAuth2/OIDC, Azure Active Directory
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement microservices within a saga-choreography architecture
- Develop event-driven workflows and manage Kafka topics across domain services
- Implement distributed data persistence and caching strategies
- Write production-grade code with comprehensive test coverage
- Collaborate on architectural decisions and API design, including OpenAPI specifications
- Optimize database performance and oversee schema migrations
- Mentor junior engineers on engineering best practices and domain-driven design
- Contribute to infrastructure automation and deployment pipelines
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years working with distributed systems
- Strong proficiency in Java with modern frameworks such as Spring Boot and Spring Cloud
- Experience with event-driven architecture and message brokers, particularly Kafka
- Demonstrated expertise with PostgreSQL and Redis or comparable caching layers
- Solid understanding of microservices patterns, distributed transactions, and eventual consistency
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes and containerization technologies
- Proven track record of writing testable, high-quality code and championing engineering best practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the Azure cloud platform
- Background in payment processing or financial systems
- Familiarity with API-first development and OpenAPI specifications
- Experience with Flyway or other database version-control tools

Compensation & Benefits
$130,000 – $150,000 per year + Cost of Living Allowance
