About the role
As a Progress OpenEdge (4GL) Database Administrator, you will make an impact by managing, maintaining, and optimizing OpenEdge database environments to ensure availability, performance, data integrity, and recoverability. You will be a valued member of the database administration and application support team, working collaboratively with application teams, developers, infrastructure partners, and business stakeholders who support 4GL/ABL applications.
In this role, you will:
· Administer Progress OpenEdge databases across development, test, and production environments, including installation, configuration, maintenance, startup/shutdown parameters, and broker configurations.
· Monitor database health and availability using promon and related diagnostic tools, responding to incidents involving performance, connectivity, or production availability.
· Design and execute backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies using probkup, prorest, After-Image areas, and documented recovery procedures.
· Tune and optimize database performance, including buffer pools, lock tables, I/O, index rebuilds/compaction, fragmentation reduction, blocking, deadlocks, and slow-running queries.
· Manage database structures and schema support activities, including storage areas, extents, .st files, dump/load operations, triggers, data model changes, and collaboration with development teams.
· Support application connectivity and server components such as AppServer, WebSpeed, or PASOE brokers, including agent pools and session models.
· Plan and support OpenEdge upgrades, patches, service packs, compatibility testing, compliance controls, user access, auditing, and operational documentation.
What you need to have to be considered
· 5+ years of experience administering Progress OpenEdge/4GL databases in production or enterprise environments.
· Strong working knowledge of OpenEdge utilities such as proutil, probkup, prorest, and promon.
· Hands-on experience with database backup/recovery strategies, After-Image management, restores, and disaster recovery planning.
· Understanding of ABL/4GL applications and how they interact with the OpenEdge database layer.
· Experience supporting OpenEdge database performance tuning, index optimization, table analysis, BI/AI file management, and production issue resolution.
· Familiarity with SQL-92 access to OpenEdge databases through ODBC/JDBC and experience with Linux/Unix and/or Windows Server environments.
These will help you stand out
· Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent experience.
· Experience with OpenEdge Replication or other high-availability configurations.
· Knowledge of PASOE (Progress Application Server for OpenEdge), AppServer, or WebSpeed administration.
· Experience implementing or maintaining OpenEdge Auditing and database security best practices.
· Scripting skills using Shell, PowerShell, or similar tools to automate database administration tasks.
· Prior experience supporting Progress OpenEdge environments used in ERP-heavy industries such as manufacturing, distribution, or healthcare.

This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
