Job Summary

Serve as a Senior Software Engineer – Backend (Java) in a hybrid work model designing and delivering resilient microservices using Spring Boot Kafka SQL JUnit5 and the broader Spring Framework. Contribute to secure and scalable cards and payments solutions that improve customer experience and operational efficiency while upholding enterprise standards.

Roles/Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement robust microservices using Spring Boot and Spring Framework to deliver secure and scalable business capabilities that align with enterprise standards and performance objectives.
  • Develop event driven components using Kafka to enable reliable data streaming and integration across distributed systems while maintaining high throughput and low latency.
  • Write clean maintainable and well-structured Java code with comprehensive JUnit5 test coverage to ensure predictable behavior ease of refactoring and reduced production defects.
  • Create efficient SQL queries views and stored logic to support transactional workloads and analytics while preserving data integrity performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with product owners and architects to refine requirements into clear technical designs that balance feasibility maintainability and long-term business value.
  • Optimize application performance by analyzing logs metrics and database execution plans to resolve bottlenecks and enhance overall system responsiveness.
  • Apply secure coding practices and conduct thorough code reviews to reduce vulnerabilities and uphold compliance with organizational security guidelines.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues in a methodical manner by analyzing system behavior logs and data flows to restore service and prevent recurrence.
  • Document system designs API contracts and deployment procedures in a clear and accessible format to support smooth onboarding and operational continuity.
  • Engage in continuous integration and continuous delivery practices by maintaining automated tests and build pipelines that promote frequent safe releases.
  • Coordinate with cross functional teams in a hybrid environment to align implementation plans resolve dependencies and meet agreed delivery timelines.
  • Mentor peers through knowledge sharing on Kafka microservices SQL and testing practices to raise overall engineering quality within the team.
  • Contribute to solution improvements in the cards and payments domain by suggesting design enhancements that increase reliability transparency and customer trust.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate strong proficiency in designing and building microservices using Spring Boot and core Spring components with a focus on modularity and maintainability.
  • Possess hands on experience with Kafka configuration topic design and consumer patterns that support resilient and scalable event driven architectures.
  • Show advanced skill in writing optimized SQL for relational databases including query tuning and indexing strategies suitable for high volume financial transactions.
  • Exhibit deep familiarity with JUnit5 testing patterns including unit integration and component tests that drive high confidence in production deployments.
  • Apply solid understanding of microservices design principles such as service boundaries fault tolerance and observability to maintain reliable platforms.
  • Utilize knowledge of general Spring Framework features such as dependency injection data access abstractions and security modules to construct cohesive solutions.
  • Bring working exposure to cards and payments concepts such as authorization settlement and reconciliation to better align technical solutions with business needs.
  • Communicate effectively in a hybrid work arrangement using digital collaboration tools and structured updates to keep stakeholders informed and engaged.

Salary and Other Compensation:

We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between $115,500 – $135,500 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

Working arrangements

We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring 2 days a week in a client office in Toronto, ON. Regardless of your working arrangement, we are here to support a healthy work-life balance though our various wellbeing programs.
