About the role
As a Java API Integration Engineer, you will make an impact by designing, developing, and supporting secure integrations that enable customer onboarding, ACH origination, transaction inquiries, and payment-status tracking. You will be a valued member of the technology team and collaborate with business, operations, risk, fraud, infrastructure, and vendor stakeholders.
In this role, you will:
- Implement and integrate Fiserv PEP+ Direct APIs for customer onboarding, ACH origination, inquiries, and status tracking.
- Develop and maintain REST and SOAP API integrations using JSON, WSDL, and OpenAPI/Swagger.
- Support ACH exception, return, investigation, and reconciliation processes.
- Participate in technical design, testing, implementation, deployments, and production support.
- Troubleshoot integration and operational issues, identify root causes, and coordinate timely resolution.
- Support API gateways, secure service-to-service communication, API publishing, subscriptions, token management, and webhooks.
- Collaborate with business and technology teams to deliver reliable payment solutions.
Location: Buffalo, New York.
Work model
We believe hybrid work is the way forward as we strive to provide flexibility wherever possible. Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring three days per week onsite and two days remote in Buffalo, New York.

Compensation
The annual salary for this position is $81,337 to $136,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans. The salary and other compensation information is accurate as of the date of this posting and may change subject to applicable law.

What you need to have to be considered
- Hands-on experience implementing banking or payment-service API integrations.
- Strong Java and Spring Boot development experience.
- Experience developing and integrating REST and SOAP APIs using JSON, WSDL, and OpenAPI/Swagger.
- Knowledge of API gateways, API publishing, subscriptions, and secure service-to-service communication.
- Experience with OAuth 2.0, TLS/mTLS, certificates, tokens, and secure authentication practices.
- Experience developing webhooks or event-driven integrations.
- Strong SQL skills and experience supporting financial-services applications.
- Professional experience working in banking or financial services.
These will help you stand out
- Experience implementing or integrating Fiserv PEP+ or PEP+ Direct.
- Experience integrating with mainframe platforms, including z/OS and DB2 for z/OS.
- Knowledge of Treasury Management or embedded-banking solutions.
- Understanding of ACH processing, NACHA rules, credits, debits, returns, NOCs, and CCD and CTX transaction types.
- Experience supporting ACH onboarding, origination, warehouse inquiries, payment-status workflows, exceptions, reconciliation, and fraud controls.
- Experience providing production support in regulated or high-volume payment environments.
