About the role
As a Senior AI Software Engineer, you will make an impact by building scalable, reliable, and responsible AI solutions that enable innovative business outcomes. You will be a valued member of the AI Engineering team and collaborate closely with product managers, business stakeholders, data professionals, and governance teams to deliver high-quality AI-powered applications and services.
In this role, you will:
· Build and enhance features across the AI application stack, including orchestration, retrieval and grounding, prompt and agent logic, evaluation frameworks, guardrails, model serving, and observability.
· Develop robust data processing and integration pipelines that support reliable AI applications, analytics, and decision-making.
· Partner with product and business stakeholders to define requirements, rapidly iterate on solutions, and measure outcomes through clearly defined success metrics.
· Implement telemetry, monitoring, and evaluation processes to improve solution quality, safety, latency, reliability, and cost efficiency.
· Contribute to architecture discussions, design reviews, testing strategies, operational playbooks, and incident response practices to ensure operational excellence.

What you need to have to be considered
· Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
· Proven software engineering experience developing backend services, APIs, or data-intensive applications.
· Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, distributed systems, and software engineering principles.
· Experience with AI and large language model (LLM) application concepts, including retrieval and grounding, prompt engineering, agent design, tool integration, evaluation frameworks, safety guardrails, and performance optimization.
· Proficiency with modern software delivery practices, including version control, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, cloud-native technologies, and containerization.
· Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and business teams.
· Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, adapt to evolving technologies, and deliver results in fast-paced environments.
· For senior-level candidates, experience owning services or platform components, leading cross-functional initiatives, and driving reliability, operational excellence, and service-level objectives (SLOs).
This will help you stand out
· Hands-on experience designing and scaling production AI applications.
· Experience implementing responsible AI practices related to security, privacy, compliance, and AI safety.
· Exposure to observability, AI evaluation frameworks, and quality measurement methodologies.
· Experience participating in incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Passion for knowledge sharing through technical documentation, demos, mentoring, and AI enablement programs.
· Experience working in highly collaborative environments where business impact, experimentation, and customer outcomes are prioritized.
Salary and Other Compensation:
The annual salary for this position is between $74,250 to $117,500 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
