About the Role
As a Senior QA Automation Engineer – Java & Playwright, you will make an impact by developing scalable automation solutions and leading end-to-end testing activities for enterprise applications. You will be a valued member of the Quality Engineering team and work collaboratively with development teams, business stakeholders, and cross-functional partners to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions.
In This Role, You Will
• Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks using Java and modern software design principles.
• Build and execute automated test suites for UI, API, and backend validation using Playwright and related technologies.
• Lead end-to-end testing activities, including test planning, execution, functional validation, defect management, and delivery ownership.
• Implement test data management and automation best practices to improve test efficiency, reliability, and overall quality.
• Collaborate with development and business teams, contribute Insurance or Wealth Management domain expertise, and provide meaningful quality metrics and status updates to senior stakeholders.

Based on this role’s business requirements, this is a hybrid position requiring three days per week in a client or Cognizant office in Toronto, Ontario. What You Need to Have to Be Considered
• At least six years of experience in software testing and test automation.
• Strong proficiency in Java, including Streams, Lambdas, Collections, and modern design patterns.
• Hands-on experience designing, developing, and maintaining Java-based automation frameworks.
• Strong experience using Playwright for UI automation, API testing, and backend validation.
• Strong manual testing capabilities, including test design, execution, functional validation, and defect lifecycle management.
• Experience with Git-based version control and CI/CD pipelines, along with a solid understanding of test data management and automation best practices.
• Proven ability to lead testing activities independently and drive deliverables through successful completion.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder-management, and collaboration skills, including experience producing QA metrics, status reports, and executive-level quality updates.
These will help you stand out
• Domain knowledge in Insurance and/or Wealth Management.
• Working knowledge of Kafka, MongoDB, and AWS S3.
• Experience working in Agile or Scrum delivery environments.
• Exposure to enterprise-scale testing programs and digital transformation initiatives.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership capabilities.

Total compensation
We regularly assess market data to ensure we offer a competitive compensation package for our associates. The base salary for this position ranges between CAD 80,000 – 110,000 per year. Where the successful candidate may fall within the range depends on relevant education, work and/or management experience and other business-related and job-necessary qualifications. This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual performance-based bonus, as well as benefits that support your physical, mental and financial wellbeing.
