Domain Consultant – Commercial & Specialty Lines Insurance
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Domain Consultant specializing in Commercial and Specialty Lines Insurance to serve as a subject-matter expert (SME) bridging business stakeholders, underwriters, and technology teams. The ideal candidate has deep functional knowledge of commercial P&C products (e.g., General Liability, Commercial Property, Commercial Auto, Umbrella/Excess) and specialty lines (e.g., Cyber, Professional Liability/E&O, Directors & Officers, Specialty Property, Liability, Entertainment) and can translate business requirements into actionable solutions across policy administration, underwriting, rating, and claims platforms.
This role sits at the intersection of insurance operations, product strategy, and technology delivery, supporting core system implementations, digital transformation initiatives, and process optimization for insurance carriers, MGAs, or brokers.
In this role, you will:
• Act as the primary insurance domain SME on client engagements involving commercial and specialty lines products, providing guidance on underwriting, rating, policy issuance, endorsements, renewals, and claims workflows.
• Elicit, document, and validate business and functional requirements from underwriters, product owners, and operations teams; translate these into detailed business requirement documents (BRDs), user stories, and functional specifications.
• Support configuration, testing, and validation of policy administration systems for commercial and specialty lines products.
• Collaborate with actuarial, underwriting, and product teams to design and validate rating algorithms, rules, and forms for commercial and specialty coverages.
• Conduct gap analysis between current-state and future-state processes, and recommend improvements to underwriting, policy servicing, and claims operations.
• Partner with technology and QA teams during system implementation, upgrades, or migrations, providing domain validation, user acceptance testing (UAT) support, and defect triage from a business perspective.
• Support product launches, regulatory compliance reviews specific to commercial and specialty lines.
• Develop training materials, process documentation, and playbooks for underwriters and operations staff on new systems or product changes.
• Present findings, recommendations, and project updates to senior stakeholders and client leadership.
• Mentor junior business analysts and consultants on insurance domain concepts and best practices.

What you need to have to be considered
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance, Risk Management, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 5+ years of experience in Commercial and/or Specialty Lines P&C insurance, in roles such as underwriter, business analyst, product analyst, or domain consultant.
• Strong working knowledge of commercial lines products: General Liability, Commercial Property, Commercial Auto, Workers' Compensation, BOP, Umbrella/Excess.
• Familiarity with one or more specialty lines: Cyber Liability, Professional Liability/E&O, Directors & Officers (D&O), Specialty Property, Liability, Entertainment.
• Solid understanding of the end-to-end insurance policy lifecycle: quoting, rating, binding, issuance, endorsements, renewals, and cancellations.
• Experience working with or configuring policy administration/core insurance platforms
• Strong analytical, requirements-gathering, and documentation skills (BRDs, user stories, process maps, use cases).
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for business audiences and vice versa.
• Experience with Agile/Scrum or hybrid delivery methodologies.

• Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, AU, AINS
• Experience with rating engine configuration, forms management
• Exposure to claims management systems and workflows for commercial/specialty lines.
• Prior experience in a consulting environment, supporting multiple carriers, MGAs, or brokers.
• Familiarity with data and reporting tools (SQL, Power BI) for underwriting or portfolio analysis.
• Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to commercial/specialty insurance.
Salary and Other Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between CAD 88,000 - CAD 140,000 depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
