About the role
As an ED Medical Coder, you will make an impact by ensuring the accurate assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes for Emergency Department and outpatient services. You will leverage your expertise in emergency medicine coding, E/M leveling, and injection/infusion charging to support compliant revenue cycle operations, maintain coding quality, and drive accurate reimbursement outcomes.
You will be a valued member of the Health Information Management team and work closely with physicians, clinical staff, auditors, and operational leaders to ensure coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.

In this role, you will:
Review clinical documentation and assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for Emergency Department, observation, outpatient surgery, and outpatient diagnostic services.
Apply Emergency Department E/M leveling guidelines and injection/infusion charging rules to support compliant coding and billing practices.
Communicate with physicians and clinical staff through the query process to obtain clarification and ensure complete and accurate documentation.
Utilize electronic encoder applications and coding resources to assign codes in accordance with regulatory requirements, coding guidelines, and organizational policies.
Perform peer reviews of coding work and support coding quality initiatives to ensure consistency and accuracy across the team.
Complete coding-related reports, audits, and special projects as requested by leadership.
Maintain a minimum coding accuracy rate of 98% while meeting established productivity and performance standards.
Identify documentation deficiencies, compliance concerns, and opportunities for coding process improvements.
What you need to have to be considered
Experience coding Emergency Department encounters in a hospital or health system environment.
Strong knowledge of Emergency Department E/M leveling methodologies.
Experience with injection and infusion charging and coding requirements.
Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines.
Experience reviewing clinical documentation and assigning diagnosis and procedure codes for outpatient services.
Ability to effectively communicate with providers regarding documentation clarification and coding queries.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to coding accuracy and compliance.
Ability to meet productivity standards while maintaining high-quality results.
These will help you stand out
Experience coding for Level I Trauma Centers.
Experience coding observation services, outpatient surgery, and outpatient diagnostics.
Prior experience conducting coding audits or peer reviews.
Knowledge of healthcare reimbursement methodologies and revenue cycle operations.
Experience using electronic encoder applications and health information management systems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Certifications
One of the following certifications is required:
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - AHIMA
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) - AAPC
Other relevant AHIMA or AAPC coding credentials may be considered.
Work Model
This is a fully remote position. Associates will work remotely while collaborating with providers, coding teams, auditors, and healthcare operations stakeholders to support coding quality, compliance, and revenue cycle objectives.

The annual salary for this position will be in the range of $52K - $57K depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate
This position is also eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program, based on performance and subject to the terms of Cognizant’s applicable plans.
